Hearing loss
Are there medications
for hearing loss?
Can surgeries or medicine help fix hearing loss?
Medications and surgical procedures are only helpful for people who have conductive hearing loss, which makes up about five percent of all hearing loss cases.
Conductive hearing loss happens when sounds can’t reach the inner ear due to some type of obstruction. Common causes of conductive hearing loss include:
- Ear infections
- Earwax
- Fluid in your middle ear
- Poor Eustachian tube function
- Malformation of the outer or middle ear
Often times — but not always — this obstruction can be cleared or fixed, which should correct the hearing loss.
Sensorineural hearing loss — which is by far the leading type of hearing loss — cannot be fixed, but can usually be successfully treated with hearing aids.
