Research by institutions, including Johns Hopkins Medicine, has linked cognitive decline and even dementia to hearing loss for reasons you can read about here. In fact, one Johns Hopkins study found that older adults with hearing loss experience a 30-40 percent faster decline in cognitive abilities than peers with normal hearing.
But a study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society pointed to good news for hearing aid wearers. Using data taken over a span of 25 years, researchers found that hearing aid use reduced the risk of cognitive decline associated with hearing loss.
More recently, the Lancet Commission on Dementia Prevention, Intervention and Care reported that treating hearing loss in midlife is the single greatest change a person can make to lower their risk of dementia.
Again, good news for hearing aid wearers and a great reason to take that first step towards treating your hearing loss.
